Sweet Briar College JYF in Paris

Housing and Student Life

Living Arrangements

Host families
For best results in language improvement and cultural immersion, students are housed with carefully selected families in Paris proper or Neuilly, one of the better districts easily accessible by metro or bus. Host families provide a unique introduction to French culture and students can experience Parisian living as part of a quartier. Students are matched with experienced host families based on an extensive questionnaire and Skype interview with JYF’s housing coordinator. Family composition and situation will vary but students are guaranteed a private room including a bed, desk, proper storage and lighting. Household linens and laundry facilities are provided. Meal times with the host family offer opportunities for students to practice their French language skills and learn to navigate the nuances of French culture. Breakfast daily and six dinners per week are included in the JYF program fee. (During university breaks only room is provided.)

Independent housing
Students seeking independent living arrangements may request this at the time of application or as soon as possible afterwards. Students are responsible for finding their own housing. Paris housing can be expensive and students should secure housing before their arrival in Paris. In such cases, the cost of room and board will be deducted from their program fee. Students are also required to demonstrate approval of independent living by their home school and parents.

Student Engagement

Students are encouraged to take advantage of all Paris has to offer by exploring and engaging with the city and its people. Outside of their classes, students are provided with opportunities to get involved in the community or university student life by joining a club or sports team or volunteering in the community. By meeting French people, students not only gain another perspective on the city and culture but also pursue personal interests and hobbies or discover new ones.

JYF staff can help students to find a volunteer opportunity that matches their interests such as volunteer teaching assistantships in public schools which are a popular activity with JYF students.
