Detailed instructions concerning passport and visa application, handling of baggage, time and place of the group meeting prior to departure, and suggestions regarding clothing will be furnished at the appropriate time.

An informal reception for students, their parents, families and friends will be held at Washington, DC Dulles Airport on the day of departure. They will have an opportunity to meet each other as well as representatives of the College and the staff of the Junior Year in France.

Group Flight

The group flight is out of Washington, DC Dulles International Airport - both in August and in January. Students will return individually. The open return part of the ticket is valid for one year.

It is preferable that students travel to Europe with the group. Should a student have reason to travel independently, a request should be made if possible at the time of application or as soon as possible after the student has been admitted. In this case the appropriate deduction, normally the price of the flight ticket, will be made in the overall fee and the student will meet the group in Tours.

Living Arrangements

For the best results in language improvement and cultural advantages, students will be lodged in selected French homes in both Tours (single or double rooms) and Paris (all single rooms), where they can hear and speak French and be exposed to French life and customs. In Paris a limited number of spaces are available in students foyers (private dormitories) for women. All Paris families are located in Paris proper, not in the suburbs, with the exception of Neuilly and Boulogne, two of the better districts easily accessible by metro or bus.

Requests for other living arrangements must be made at the time of application or as soon as possible afterwards.

In Tours students take breakfast and dinner in the French homes. In Paris French hostesses usually accept students on a demi-pension basis, and students may buy their own lunches in the university restaurants or elsewhere. Room and board is provided until May 31st (December 22nd for fall semester students) or the day after the student's last examination if later.

Living standards in France are certainly adequate although they may differ from those to which some students are accustomed. Students should be flexible and understand that their preferences regarding food, animals, smoking habits, etc. cannot always be accommodated. Students who believe that they are unable or unwilling to adjust to new living conditions should consider this matter carefully before deciding to study abroad.
